Summary

This legislation mandates the Secretary of Health and Human Services to engage the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to conduct a comprehensive study. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility and design of a national, confidential, and secure system for the storage and authorized retrieval of individuals' last wish documents , provided at no cost to the individual. The term "last wish document" encompasses a range of critical personal directives, including advance directives organ donor registrations healthcare or medical proxies powers of attorney and living wills . The agreement with the National Academies will require them to submit a status report on the study to the Secretary and Congress within two years, followed by the complete study results within four years of the Act's enactment.
