Measuring the Cost of Disasters Act of 2025

This legislation, titled the "Measuring the Cost of Disasters Act of 2025," requires the Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to create and maintain a publicly accessible database and webpage. This platform will compile detailed information on every billion-dollar disaster that occurs each year across the United States. The required information for each event includes its estimated cost, type, location, and specific dates, with updates mandated at least biannually. The database and webpage must also incorporate visual graphs and mapping features, similar to those previously provided by the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), to illustrate disaster trajectories and distribution. NOAA is authorized to use available data and collaborate with federal and non-federal partners for this initiative, and the Administrator may also include disasters not reaching the billion-dollar threshold if deemed appropriate. Furthermore, the bill mandates the continued maintenance and archiving of the existing historical disaster database from NCEI for research purposes.
