Italian Heroes and Heritage Act

This legislation, known as the "Italian Heroes and Heritage Act," aims to ensure the continued nationwide observance of Christopher Columbus Day. It proposes to withhold Federal funds from any state or local government that chooses to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day in place of Columbus Day. The bill includes findings asserting that Christopher Columbus discovered America and that President Benjamin Harrison established Columbus Day in 1892 to honor both Columbus's voyage and the murder of 11 Italian-Americans in New Orleans. Congress expresses its sense that October 13th should remain Christopher Columbus Day to recognize Italian-American heritage and Columbus's historical role. This prohibition on federal funding would take effect annually, beginning after October 13, 2025.
