The Literacy in Future Technologies Artificial Intelligence Act, or LIFT AI Act, seeks to significantly improve artificial intelligence (AI) literacy for K-12 students and educators. Congress recognizes AI's transformative impact and emphasizes the importance of providing youth with the skills to use and create AI technology, ensuring the United States remains a global leader. To achieve this, the bill authorizes the Director of the National Science Foundation to make competitive, merit-reviewed awards to institutions of higher education or nonprofit organizations. These awards will support research and development of educational curricula , instructional materials , and teacher professional development specifically focused on AI literacy at the K-12 level. Award funds can be used for various activities, including developing learner-centered K-12 AI curriculum, engaging educators in professional learning opportunities to enhance AI literacy and promote responsible use, and creating evaluation tools. Additionally, funds may support designing professional development courses, developing hands-on learning tools, and augmenting existing curricula to incorporate AI literacy.
