INSPECT Act of 2025

This legislation requires the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to assign a dedicated resident inspector to commercial nuclear power plants that have permanently ceased operations. The primary role of this inspector will be to conduct thorough inspections of both decommissioning activities and the critical process of spent nuclear fuel transfer activities at these sites. The assignment of a resident inspector will continue for a specific duration: until all spent nuclear fuel has been successfully transferred from the plant's spent fuel pools into dry storage. This ensures continuous oversight during a crucial period of potential risk. Should there be no active decommissioning or fuel transfer activities, the NRC retains the flexibility to reassign the inspector to other appropriate duties.
