Udvar Hazy Center to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. This transfer must occur within 18 months of the bill's enactment, under the direction of the NASA Administrator. The Administrator and the Smithsonian Institution are mandated to jointly develop a detailed plan for this transfer, including an estimated timeline and cost, which must be submitted to Congress within 90 days. Following the physical relocation, the Smithsonian Institution must transfer the title to the shuttle to NASA within one year. The bill stipulates that the Discovery space shuttle shall be placed on public exhibition within five miles of the Johnson Space Center to advance science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning. Furthermore, the Administrator may transfer the shuttle's title to a designated nonprofit entity, provided that the entity maintains the shuttle on public exhibition for STEM education in the same specified location. The bill also authorizes necessary appropriations to carry out these provisions.
Referred to the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, and in addition to the Committee on House Administration, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
