This legislation establishes an Office of Graduate Medical Education Programs within the Indian Health Service (IHS) to amend the Indian Health Care Improvement Act. The Office's primary purpose is to create a pipeline for future healthcare professionals, paraprofessionals, and other health-related personnel to participate in residency and fellowship programs, thereby enhancing the healthcare workforce. Key duties include overseeing current residency programs, facilitating the establishment of new ones to support recruitment and retention at IHS facilities, and serving as a central hub for these programs. It will also coordinate with academic institutions and manage medical student rotational and education track programs. An interagency working group , involving several federal agencies, will assist in the Office's implementation and long-term sustainability, submitting quarterly reports to Congress for ten years. To fund these initiatives, the bill authorizes an appropriation of not less than $4,000,000 for fiscal year 2027 and each subsequent fiscal year.
Referred to the Committee on Natural Resources, and in addition to the Committee on Energy and Commerce, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
Referred to the Subcommittee on Indian and Insular Affairs.
