This bill, known as the "College Employment Accountability Act," seeks to amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 by establishing new requirements for institutions of higher education regarding the employment of unauthorized aliens. Specifically, it stipulates that any institution found to be in violation of immigration laws concerning the employment of unauthorized individuals will be ineligible to receive funds from Federal student assistance or Federal institutional aid. This measure aims to ensure that federal funding does not support institutions that are not compliant with federal immigration employment regulations. Furthermore, the legislation mandates that institutions of higher education must participate in the E-Verify Program to qualify for any program authorized under Title IV of the Higher Education Act. The Department of Homeland Security is tasked with monitoring institutions every six months to ensure their participation in E-Verify. DHS will also notify the Secretary of Education within ten days if an institution violates immigration employment laws or fails to participate in the E-Verify Program, triggering potential loss of federal funding eligibility.
Referred to the Committee on Education and Workforce, and in addition to the Committee on the Judiciary, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
