National Weather Service Communications Improvement Act

This legislation, known as the National Weather Service Communications Improvement Act, mandates a significant upgrade to the National Weather Service's (NWS) instant messaging service. By October 1, 2027, the NWS Director must implement a commercial off-the-shelf communications solution to replace the existing "NWSChat" system. The new solution is required to be public cloud-hosted and meet specific criteria for future growth, user scalability, and ease of use, similar to other commercial systems. To facilitate this upgrade, the bill allocates up to $3,000,000 annually from the NWS's Operations, Research, and Facilities budget for fiscal years 2026 through 2029. This funding ensures the modernization of NWS communication capabilities, enhancing operational efficiency and responsiveness.
