This legislation, titled the Survivor Benefits Fairness Act , aims to amend title 38 of the United States Code concerning the effective date of certain reductions and discontinuances of benefits administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Specifically, it revises section 5112(b)(1) to alter when these benefit changes take effect. The bill changes the language from "last day of the month before" to "last day of the month during which" an event occurs. This means that if a beneficiary's compensation, dependency and indemnity compensation, or pension is to be reduced or discontinued due to a marriage, remarriage, or death , the change will now become effective at the end of the month in which that event happened, rather than the end of the preceding month. This amendment will apply to such events occurring on or after the Act's enactment date.
