This bill, titled the "Safe Storage Lockers for House Office Buildings Act," aims to enhance the safety of House of Representatives employees by allowing them to securely store self-defense weapons within House Office Buildings. It acknowledges the high violent crime rate in the District of Columbia and the fact that many employees commute by walking, often carrying weapons legally for self-defense outside federal buildings. The legislation specifically authorizes House employees, including interns and fellows, who are permitted under District of Columbia law to carry self-defense sprays, stun guns, or certain firearms, to bring these items into House Office Buildings. Upon entering, employees must immediately place their weapons in secure storage lockers operated by the United States Capitol Police, retrieving them only when exiting the building. The Capitol Police Board is mandated to design, install, and operate these lockers at external pedestrian entrances of all House Office Buildings within 180 days of the bill's enactment, and to promulgate necessary regulations.
