This legislation, titled the "761st Tank Battalion Congressional Gold Medal Act," seeks to award a Congressional Gold Medal to the 761st Tank Battalion, known as the "Black Panthers." This honor recognizes their crucial role in the success of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and their pioneering status as the first Black American armored unit to see combat. The battalion served valiantly for 183 days, playing a significant part in battles like the Battle of the Bulge, breaking the Siegfried Line, and linking with the Russian Army, despite facing prejudice and delayed recognition for their extraordinary gallantry. Following its presentation, the gold medal will be given to the National Museum of African American History and Culture for display and research, with a sense of Congress that it should also be displayed at other relevant locations. The Secretary of the Treasury is authorized to design and strike the medal, as well as to produce and sell duplicate bronze medals to the public. Funds from the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund will cover the costs of striking the medals, with proceeds from duplicate sales returning to the fund.
Referred to the Committee on Financial Services, and in addition to the Committee on House Administration, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned.
