The "Promoting Responsible Oversight To Eliminate Communist Teachings for Our Kids Act," or PROTECT Our Kids Act , aims to restrict federal education funding for elementary and secondary schools. It specifically prohibits the availability of federal funds to any school that receives direct or indirect support from the Government of the People's Republic of China (PRC). This measure targets various forms of influence within the U.S. education system. This prohibition applies to schools with partnerships, such as those involving Confucius Institutes , or that operate learning centers like Confucius Classrooms . It also covers schools receiving support in the form of teaching materials, personnel, funds, or other resources from individuals or entities acting on behalf of the PRC government. The prohibition takes effect one year after the bill's enactment, allowing a transition period. Schools that have contracts in place before the enactment date, which would otherwise violate this prohibition, may submit a waiver request to the Secretary of Education. This request must include the full contract text and a statement demonstrating the contract's benefit to the school's mission and its promotion of U.S. security, stability, and economic vitality. The Secretary is also mandated to notify affected schools and provide compliance guidance within 90 days of enactment.
