REAL Sugar Act

This legislative proposal, titled the "Removing Excess Additives and Limiting Sugar Act" or the "REAL Sugar Act," seeks to amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Its primary objective is to prohibit the inclusion of high fructose corn syrup in any food intended for human consumption, classifying such food as adulterated. The prohibition on high fructose corn syrup will not be immediately effective, as it is designed to apply to articles introduced into interstate commerce two years after the date of the bill's enactment. This delayed applicability provides a transition period for the food industry. Additionally, the bill mandates that the Secretary of Health and Human Services, through the Commissioner of Food and Drugs, submit a comprehensive report to Congress within three years of enactment. This report must detail the status of industry reformulation efforts, any regulatory changes implemented to comply with the Act, and provide recommendations for potential additional congressional action.
