Mail Theft and Postal Key Crime Prevention Act of 2026

This legislation seeks to improve the investigation and prosecution of organized mail theft and associated fraud offenses across the United States. It addresses the growing problem of mail theft, including incidents involving collection boxes and postal keys, and the increasing involvement of organized criminal groups in schemes like identity theft and check fraud facilitated by stolen mail. A key provision requires the Attorney General to designate a Mail Theft Coordinator in each judicial district. These assistant United States attorneys will be responsible for coordinating and supervising the investigation and prosecution of offenses related to mail theft, unlawful possession of postal keys, and organized schemes involving identity theft, check fraud, and bank fraud facilitated through stolen mail. They are mandated to coordinate with various federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, including the United States Postal Inspection Service and the FBI. Additionally, the bill directs the United States Sentencing Commission to review and amend federal sentencing guidelines to ensure appropriate enhancements for offenses involving theft or trafficking of postal keys organized or large-scale mail theft schemes identity theft or fraud facilitated by stolen mail violence against postal employees theft affecting multiple victims or substantial financial loss . The Attorney General is also required to submit annual reports on organized mail theft trends and prosecution efforts for five years.
