Summary

This bill seeks to honor Roberto Clemente Walker , an American humanitarian and star athlete from Puerto Rico, by directing the placement of a statue of him within the U.S. Capitol or on the Capitol Grounds. The legislation highlights Clemente's significant contributions both as a legendary baseball player and as a dedicated humanitarian, who tragically died while delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The bill mandates the Joint Committee on the Library to obtain this statue within two years of the bill's enactment. In selecting an artist, the Committee is directed to consider individuals from a variety of backgrounds, including the Puerto Rican community and other underrepresented demographic groups, and to make public announcements targeting them. The statue may be acquired through donation. Once obtained, the Architect of the Capitol , under the Joint Committee's direction, will permanently install the statue in an appropriate location. To fund this initiative, the bill authorizes the United States Capitol Preservation Commission to transfer up to $500,000 from the Capitol Preservation Fund to the Joint Committee and the Architect of the Capitol for the statue's acquisition and installation.
