This bill amends the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 to establish new criteria for prioritizing the acceptance of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. It directs the Secretary to consider specific factors when determining the order in which waste is accepted for disposal or storage. Highest priority will be given to waste from civilian nuclear power reactors that are decommissioned or decommissioning . Other top priorities include reactors located in areas with the largest populations , areas with the highest earthquake hazards as indicated by USGS maps, and areas where continued storage poses a significant national security concern , as determined in consultation with defense and homeland security officials.
