Understanding AI in the Classroom Act

This bill mandates the Director of the National Science Foundation to organize workshops within 18 months of its enactment. These workshops are designed to identify gaps in data and published findings concerning the effects of artificial intelligence integration into classrooms on children. The scope includes examining potential harm or impact on children's attention span, learning independence, cognitive, social, emotional, or behavioral development, and the risk of over-reliance or trust miscalibration on AI. The workshops will also consider differential effects based on factors such as age, vulnerabilities, and specific characteristics of the AI. The Director is encouraged to involve researchers, educators, school leaders, and parent groups in this process. Following the completion of these workshops, a comprehensive report detailing the identified data gaps must be submitted to specific congressional committees and publicly published within six months.
